Choose any image to make your Website Favicon!

What is a Favicon?

First many of you may want to know exactly what a Website Favicon is. If you stop what you are reading and look up at the top browser window, you will see a little image that represents the web page you are on. Many of us Hubbers (members of Hubpages) will have our profile image as our Favicon on our Articles (Hubs). This little image is great to place on your personal websites and web pages so that readers can start recognizing you and your published content.

How to create a Favicon?

Creating your Favicon is fairly simple. However, the process of getting your Favicon to display on your website and web pages may be the challenge for some people. Here at Hubpages, the favicon is created for you so you don't need to bother. If you have a website where you want to make a new favicon then all you do is find the image that you want as your favicon and search for a "Favicon Generator" online. You can then use the browse button and upload your image to the Favicon Generator of your choice. There are many generators online for you to use for free.

The Generator will then change your image into a favicon.ico file. This helps decrease your favicon image to 16x16 px. The file then can be uploaded to your website either via your cpanel or your Website Builder. Some Website hosting companies generate your favicon for you with just a few clicks. There are others that have just access to their website's cpanel.

How to upload Favicon to cpanel?

For those of you who have access to your cpanel, you must go to your File manager and look for your favicon.ico file. If you don't have one, create your favicon and then hit the upload button in your website cpanel. Make sure your favicon is named favicon.ico.

How to change the favicon on my website?

For those of you who have site builders, change your favicon through your site builder or talk to your web hosting company if you don't have access to your control panel.

To change your favicon via cpanel, simple make your favicon with a favicon generator and then replace the favicon.ico with your new image file.

Yes sure, a favicon adds some extra vigour to a website and this small icon is also helpful in case of website's marketing strategies and their brand images. I remember that coloured one of google and red-white strip icon of youtube. :)

Well, very informative and useful hub. Many thanks..

Thanks for this Hub!

I downloaded FileZilla and attempted to upload the favicon file, but it's not doing me much good since I don't have the host and account information - I'm using someone else computer. Next option for me, I guess, will be to go through my hosting company.

Fav-icon is the only thing which represents your site firstly, and first impression is the last impression. Good hubs. Thanks for sharing

Oh man, the amount of times people have asked us "what is a FavIcon" is just silly!

We just don't tell them anymore and do it anyway! =)

Perhaps I should point them to your hub? hehe

Cheers
